Flashlights on Nature by Grant Allen FIRST EDITION 1899

With 150 illustrations by Frederick Enock Published in 1899 by George Newnes Ltd

A beautiful Victorian book on nature and insects. Charles Grant Blairfindie Allen (Feb 24 1948 - Oct 25 1899) was Canadian science writer and novelist, and a proponent of the theory of evolution. At the age of 13 he and his parents moved to the United States, then to France and eventually to England. There he received a scholarship to Merton College, Oxford University, graduating in 1871. In his twenties Allen came across Darwin's Origin of Species and Edward Clodd's The Childhood of the World. These two books were to set off Allen's later struggles to escape what he perceived to be the bonds of religious orthodoxy, becoming an agnostic socialist. Many of Allen's books dealt with scientific subjects, and include Physiological Aesthetics, Flowers and Their Pedigrees, The Evolution of the Idea of God. Flashlights on Nature, which was published in the year of his death. Allen also turned his attention to fiction, writing about 30 novels, two of which were under female pseudonyms. He also became a pioneer in British science fiction, with the 1895 novel The British Barbarians.
